Introduction

When I first planned my trip to southern Cambodia, I thought Kampot and Kep would feel almost the same.

They are so close to each other that it seemed logical.

Maybe one is just a smaller version of the other.

But that idea disappears quickly once you arrive.

Within a day, you feel the difference.

And it is not something you can see on a map.
It is something you notice in how you spend your time.

Kampot: The place you settle into without realizing it

Kampot does not try to impress you.

There are no big highlights that you feel pressured to see.
No packed schedule you need to follow.

And that is exactly why people stay longer than planned.

Days start slowly here.

You go for coffee, maybe walk along the river, and at some point you decide what to do next. Or you don’t.

Some afternoons turn into scooter rides through the countryside.
Others end up as long, lazy sunsets by the water.

Personal insight: after a few days, you stop asking “what should I do today?” and start enjoying whatever the day becomes.

Places like AHHA Group make that even easier, because everything feels accessible without needing to plan too much.

Kep: A place you visit, not one you stay in

Kep feels different from the moment you arrive.

It is quieter. More spread out. Almost minimal.

There is less to do, and you feel that immediately.

But that is also its charm.

You come here for simple things.

Walking along the coast.
Eating fresh seafood at the crab market.
Sitting somewhere with a view and not doing much at all.

It is peaceful, but it does not pull you in the same way Kampot does.

Honest observation: Kep is nice, but after a few hours, most people feel like they have seen enough.

The difference you only notice once you are there

On paper, they look similar.

In reality, they play completely different roles in your trip.

Kampot is where your days naturally unfold.
Kep is where you go for a change of scenery.

In Kampot, you build a rhythm.
In Kep, you pause for a moment.

It is a small difference, but it changes everything.

A typical travel pattern (That actually makes sense)

After talking to other travelers, you start noticing a pattern.

Almost everyone ends up doing the same thing.

They base themselves in Kampot.
And take a day trip to Kep.

Not because Kep is less interesting, but because Kampot simply works better as a place to stay.

You have more options, more flexibility, and more ways to fill your days without trying too hard.

Funny reality: Kep often feels like a quiet break… and Kampot feels like coming back to life again.

Is it easy to visit Kep from Kampot?

Very easy.

The distance is short, and the road is straightforward.

You can leave in the morning, spend a few hours exploring, and be back in Kampot before sunset.

No complicated planning, no long travel time.

If you stay somewhere central, organising this becomes even simpler.

So… which one should you choose?

If you are still deciding, do not overcomplicate it.

Choose Kampot if you want:

  • A place where you can stay longer without getting bored
  • Good food, cafés, and a relaxed social atmosphere
  • The freedom to plan your days as you go

Choose Kep if you want:

  • A quiet, slower environment
  • A short escape near the coast
  • A few calm hours without distractions

Final thoughts

Kampot and Kep are not competing with each other.

They complement each other.

But if you only have time for one, Kampot is usually the better choice.

Not because it is more impressive.

But because it gives you more space to enjoy your time, without needing to think too much about it.

And that is often what makes a place stay with you longer than expected.
